OBJECTIVES:

Place Chemistry in a societal context. Develop the chemical principles needed and show their connections to the issues.

Introduce data analysis and scientific inquiry Practice decision-making skills by applying chemical knowledge to scientific/technological aspects of a problem.

Prepare students for further study in Chemistry such as Advanced Placement (AP).

Gateway Exam:
The High School Gateway in Science assesses students’ language arts and science knowledge and skills. Students write an essay on a science topic. In writing his response, a student must use his own knowledge about the topic and pull information from the documents that are provided. Click for Additional Resources.

[Makeups/Test Retakes (grade below 70) must be completed within the following two available Wed/Sat School days. A grade no higher than 74 can be received for test retakes. There will be no exceptions.]
Communication and Grade reporting
The Gwinnett County Parent Portal will be the central method of communication of grades. Parents and students can log into the Parent Portal at any time with any computer to see grades that are updated every night.

ATTENDANCE:
Your attendance in class is absolutely essential. Should you miss a class, it is your responsibility to see me for missed assignments. SHOULD YOU MISS A CLASS THE DAY BEFORE A TEST OR QUIZ, YOU WILL STILL BE REQUIRED TO TAKE THE TEST. HOWEVER, IF YOU MISS CLASS DURING THE TEST THE MAKEUP WILL BE SCHEDULED ON ONE OF THE FOLLOWING TWO SCHEDULED WED/SAT SCHOOL DAYS. I WILL ALWAYS ANNOUNCE TESTS/QUIZZES. AHEAD OF TIME. THERE ARE NO EXCUSES FOR NOT BEING PREPARED.
CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS:
- There may be 2-4 hours of daily work per week and students are expected to budget their time accordingly. Work will be collected the day the chapter test is taken. Students are expected to be in their seats with all materials needed and ready to work when the bell rings.
- Assignments are due at the beginning of the period and it should not be assumed that class time would be allowed to complete an assignment on the due date. WebAssign work should be finished by the deadline in the computer— WebAssign assignments can not be extended once the program has closed
- HONESTY – Expected from every student in class. When you put your name on a paper, you are saying it is your work. Dishonesty will have adverse consequences such as a zero grade for the assignment in question, detention, parent contact, and administrative referral.
- Students should not do their Chemistry homework in other classes nor should they do other homework during Chemistry class. Any such incidences will result in the assignment being confiscated and sent to the appropriate teacher.
- Each student is expected to obey all safety rules during a lab activity or suffer a grade of zero and administrative referral if the incident warrants such action
LATE WORK POLICY:
Late assignments will receive a grade no higher than 70 once turned in

- Tardies: 1st – Warning; 2nd – Parent Contact; 3rd – Teacher Detention; 4th – Teacher Detention; 5th and Subsequent Tardies will result in an administrative referral.
- Minor Infractions: 1st – Warning; 2nd – Parent Contact; 3rd – Teacher Detention; 4th – Teacher Detention; 5th and Subsequent occurrences will result in an Administrative Referral.
- Severe Disruption – Immediate Response Team: This intervention is used after classroom management has been unsuccessful or is implemented for a more serious offense.
- Unauthorized Electronic Devices - Use of Cell Phones or other unauthorized electronic devices will result in the confiscation of the device.
